Chun*, 13, is studying in grade nine at a high school in Ratanak Kiri Province in Cambodia. CARE has provided the school with a computer lab to encourage students to have an interest in learning information communication technology (ICT) and ensure they have good opportunities to study this.
“I was very happy when I heard the school would receive a computer lab from CARE. With these improved facilities, I hoped that I would be able to become literate in modern skills. I was so excited when the computers provided by CARE arrived at my school. The computer lab helps a lot.
I enjoy learning ICT, because I find it benefits and supports my other studies. I have been able to use the computer to learn how to use Ms. Word or Excel. It is easy to make a student list and exchange documents with other students.
My teacher received training from the Teacher Training college so they can teach us ICT. The teacher explained the benefits of using them as tools and resources for gathering information. It has been great to have the computer lab so I can access computers for practice. I hope in the future, I will have better skills and can keep using these to do research for my studies.
Using computers at school gives me more motivation to work hard and pass my exam. Our teachers encourage us to study hard outside of class to improve our understanding and try to solve problems independently, so the computers make this more enjoyable and we get to practice our skills more while we are learning other subjects too.
Teachers use them as tools as well, to help gather student on file management, or compile teaching activities and resources for their students. Getting this knowledge of technology is especially important because when we get a job in the future we need to know about how to use computers.”
CARE is working to include more information about information communication technology, sexual reproductive health, and 21st century skills into the curriculum, so that all lower secondary schools students in Ratanak Kiri can receive a 21st century education.
